The -ung family (100% hit rate!) 🎯

  • die Bildung / education, die Meinung / opinion, die Zeitung / newspaper, die Erfahrung / experience
  • Mnemonic: "Ung words are female, that's the swing!"

The -heit/-keit sisters 👯‍♀️

  • die Wahrheit / truth, die Freiheit / freedom, die Möglichkeit / possibility, die Schwierigkeit / difficulty
  • Mnemonic: "Heit and Keit are ladies, that's reality!"

The -ie international 🌍

  • die Philosophie / philosophy, die Geographie / geography, die Demokratie / democracy

Countries WITH articles keep them:

Liquids are often masculine or feminine, rarely neutral 🍷

Days, months, and seasons are masculine 📅

Most metals are neutral ⚙️

  • das Gold / gold, das Silber / silver, das Eisen / iron

  • When in doubt between der/die: Choose "die" (about 46% of all German nouns)
  • "Der" follows with 34%
  • "Das" only 20%
